Saint Pius V’s document Quo Primum (1570)

This is a website about Catholicism in general and about one aspect of Catholicism in particular, namely, Saint Pius V’s Papal Bull Quo Primum (1570), meaning “from the first”, which states that his Missal remains “in posterum perpetuis futuris temporibus” [“it shall be unlawful henceforth and forever throughout the Christian world to sing or to read Masses according to any formula other than that of this Missal“]:

“By this present Constitution, which will be valid henceforth, now, and forever, We order and enjoin that nothing must be added to Our recently published Missal, nothing omitted from it, nor anything whatsoever be changed within it.”

The Papal Bull concludes:

“No one whosoever is permitted to alter this notice of Our permission, statute, ordinance, command, precept, grant, indult, declaration, will, decree, and prohibition. Should anyone dare to contravene it, let him know that he will incur the wrath of Almighty God and of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul.”

The Missal referred to is known as the Tridentine Mass, the Latin Mass or the Mass of the Ages. The full text of the Papal Bull Quo Primum can be read at this webpage.
